The Minister of State for Economic Empowerment of Women and Youth Violette Khairallah Al-Safadi launched the national strategy to combat Violence against Women, which was prepared by the Ministry of Women Affairs in partnership with the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) and the United Nations Population Fund in Lebanon (UNFPA), embassies and representatives of civil society organizations at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Ain el-Mraisseh.\u00a0The launch of the strategy was preceded by a two-day meeting of the National Consultative Meeting on the Economic Cost of Violence against Women in Lebanon, during which the results of the field work report were presented, including several interviews with a number of ministries, departments and civil society organizations to better understand the services provided to women survivors of violence. The aim of the meeting was to determine the scope of the geographical work, the proposed methodology, the operational plan and the type of violence that the study will focus on to estimate the cost of the study.\u00a0During the launching ceremony, Minister Al-Safadi stated that “the message of the Ministry of State for the Economic Empowerment of Women and Youth affirms the support of achieving the goals of sustainable development through the socio-economic empowerment of the less fortunate groups, such as youth and women, to develop their choices towards a more productive life and improve their living conditions.\u201d\u00a0Minister Al-Safadi added that \u201cthe absence of women\u2019s economic independence is a reason for their infiltration in the cycle of violence and in the reduction of their role in the family and community; so what if the situation of women victims of violence is added to the lack of financial independence?\u00a0 This is an additional factor to weaken women\u2019s ability to address violence, and a notable obstacle to their re-engagement in society.
